SELECTED AMATEURS ta MEET PROFESSIONALS DECISION IN BRITAIN (Rec. 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 6. Amateurs this year take part in British professional golf tournaments for the first time. The Royal and Ancient Club, St. Andrews, and the Joint Advisory Council of the British Golf Unions agreed to allow selected amateurs to play against professionals without loss of status. This step has been taken so that British amateurs will be at no disadvantage against American amateurs who compete in all tournaments. A total of £•27,000 sterling in prize money will be offered during the professional season, which begins in March and lasts until mid-October. There are nearly 50 stroke and match play tournaments in the seven months.
