ATLANTIC PACT PENDING

United States and Canada

MILITARY DEFENCE ALLIANCE (N.Z.P.A.-Eeuter—Copyright). (Rec. 10.20 a.m.) PARIS, Jan. 6. An Atlantic pact linking the United States and Canada in a military defence alliance with the five Powers signatory to the Brussels Treaty, will be signed by the end of January, say usually reliable diplomatic sources. They said that the draft of the pact defines the “Atlantic security zone” as including Iceland, Norway and Denmark, but it will remain for these countries to accept or reject the obligations proposed in the pact, which will need ratification by the Parliaments of the States concerned.

Responsible circles point out that American and Canadian ratification would go far to reassure other participants that the obligations for mutual defence they undertook by the Brussels Treaty had the practical backing of the United States. The pact will be one of the subjects reviewed by Mr Bevin and Mr Robert Schuman (Prime Minister of France) in London next Thursday.
