BUILDING CONTROLS RELAXATION
STRONG PROTEST BY CARPENTERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, December 8. The annual conference of the New Zealand Carpenters and Joiners’ Union at Wellington protested strongly against the relaxation of building controls, believing this would further increase costa and allow the diversion of building materials and labour from workers’ houses. A proposal that the Federation of Labour should apply immediately for a wage increase of £2 a week was unanimously endorsed. The conference decided that restoration of the ■workers’ standard of living to the prewar level be demanded. Officers elected were: President, Mr F. L. Langley, of Christchurch; vicepresident, Mr W. A. Greig; executive, Messrs D. McEwen and J. R. French, all of Auckand; secretary, Mr R. Stanley.
