GIRLS’ MARCHING

Need for Association MEETING LAST EVENING A meeting was held in the Community Centre rooms in Ashburton last evening to bring about the setting up of a marching association in the district. The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) pre sided over an attendance of 14, repre senting the six maching teams and the Athletic Club. Mr Bathurst said 'he felt that th* time had come for the girls’ march ing teams to form some sort of organisation or controlling body within the county, and he was very keen to sefe such a move made. In the course of rather prolonged discussion and the reading of the N.Z Marching Association’s constitution. Mr E. J. Wood, representing the Athletic Club, said that since his bod> came under the constitution of the association it would be quite in ordes for the Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club to affiliate with the N.Z. March ing and Recreation Association (Inc.;. It was felt that this would eliminate unnecessary hardships, and such a move would be to the mutual benefit of the parties. • It was moved by Mr R. Brunton and seconded by Mr T. Samuels and cat ried “that a marching sub-committee be* formed within the Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club, to be affiliated to the N.Z. Marching and Recreation Aa sociation (Inc.).” The following officers were elected. Chairman, Mr R. Manley (represent ing N.Z. Farmers); secretary, pro tent Mr C. Smith (Athletic Club); committee, Mrs Bryce (Hospital Laundry/, Mr Pratt (N.Z. Railway), with a Keep Fit' representative yet to be nominated. Mr Bathurst said he was keen to see marching firmly established in Ashburton, and now that a move had been made in setting up this body, no doubt more firms would be at tracted to organise their teams. In conclusion, Mr Bathurst thanked all for attending and left further bust ness to be handled by the newlyformed committee.
