FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 7, 1898). Christmas Cantata—The choir of the Baring Square Church, under the leadership of Mr W. McDonald, is practising special music, to be sung on Christmas Day, which this year falls on Sunday. The selections comprise marches, anthems, hymns, carols and glees, composed by Dr. T. L. Fowke, M.A. The whole cantata is particularly tun’eful, and, as will be assumed, the words have reference to Christmas, and are largely taken from Scripture. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 7, 1923). Canterbury Pilgrims—At the first annual meeting of the Canterbury Pilgrims’ Association, held at Christchurch, yesterday, the following officers were elected: —President, the Mayor (Mr J. A. Fisher); vice-presi-dents, Mr John Anderson, the Rev. F. G. Brittan, Dean Harper, Mrs John Deans, Messrs Theq. Barker, R. C. Bishop, M. J. Gresson, A. D. Dobson, G. Jameson, T. Phillips, N. MacFarlane, L. Bowen, and C. P. Cox; committee, Dr. J. Hight, Professor J. Shelley, Messrs E. R. Webb, G. Hanmer, W. Johnson, R. E. Owen, J. R. Cuningham, C. Hastings, Bridge, W. S. LovellSmith, C. Littlecot, and L. B. Hart. The number will be made up to 18, further nominations being in the hands of the committee. The membership was reported to be 351. It is proposed to elect as “foundation members” any who arrived in Canterbury before 1854.
