ASHBURTON TOURNEY
PLAYERS UNDER 18 YEARS The first tennis tournament for players under 18 years was held at Ashburton on Saturday and proved a great success. Many senior players could have learned a lesson on Saturday in assisting those in control. There was a rush to umpire matches, and players were ready to go on the court as required. The courts were heavy for a start but dried out quickly. Trophies of miniature cups were presented to the winners by Mr W. T. Watkins, and the tournament was managed by Messrs L. Armstrong, M. Jordan, and N. Gosnell. The president of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association (Mr T. L. Crooks) declared the tournament open. Results were:— Girls’ Singles—Semi-finals: Miss L. Gunn beat Miss J. Robilliard, 6-5; Miss M. McKay beat Miss M. Craig, 6-0. Final: Miss Gunn beat Miss McKay, 9-2. Girls’ Doubles —Semi-final: Misses L. Gunn and M. 1 Taylor beat Misses J. McQuilken and A. Thompson, 6-1; Misses Milne and Beach beat Misses Millichamp and McGregor, 6-2. Final: Misses Gunn and Taylor beat Misses Milne and Beach, 9-6. Boys’ Singles—R. Pearce beat G. Gower, 6-5; J. Corbitt beat E. Ralston, 6-3. Final: Corbitt beat Pearce, 9-5. Boys’ Doubles —Pearce and Corbitt beat Gower and Hooper, 6-4; Guiney and Ralston beat L. and C. Thomas. Final: Pearce and Corbitt beat Guiney and Ralston, 9-7.
TOWN V. COUNTRY ASHBURTON TEAM FAILS i The Ashubrton team met with little success at the Town v. Country tennis tourney li£ld at Wilding Park, Chustchurcli, on Saturday. COUNTRY COMPETITION FINAL MATCH PLAYED The fifth and final match in the country tennis competition was played at Hinds on Saturday between Hinds and Eiffelton. Up till then both teams had won four matches, neithei having been defeated this season. Hinds defeated Eiffelton by 15 sets to 9 and 118 games to 92. LAURISTON CLUB’S WIN * A tennis match between Winclimore and Lauriston, at Lauriston, on Saturday resulted in a win for Lauriston by 19 sets, 134 games, to 5 sets, 90 games.
