25-MILE EVENT TO ARTHUR Twelve riders faced the starter in the 25-mile race held by * the Ashburton Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday, A. Arthur making good use ot ,his handicap to till first place. TINWALD CLUB WIN FOR J. WHYTE Although the, field of riders was small, the 27-mile road race over three laps of the Willowby block conducted by the Tinwald Cycling Club on Saturday, with the W. J. Mullins Challenge Cup at stake, proved one of the most exciting of recent years. With two laps covered, the only pair left with a chance were the limit man, J. Clinton (Omin) and. A. McKenzie (lmin). Clinton at that stage was half a minte in front of McKenzie, hut the latter had staged ' a great solo effort and was fast overlia,uling the leader. McKenzie was 35 secs ahead of J. Whyte (scr) and R. Brunton (lmin). When the Ford’s Road stretch remained to he covered, McKenzie held the lead with Whyte making his hid to pass him. McKenzie tried desperately to stave off this challenge, but Whyte steadily overtook him and went on to win< by half a wheel. Brunton, a. short distance away, was third. Results were:— J Whyte (scr) 1 and fastest tame with 77min llsec, A. McKenzie (lmin) 2 and second fastest time of 78mm 12sec, R. Brunton (lmin) 3, T. Aldridge (scr) 4.
