DAMAGE TO PENAL COLONY

EARTHQUAKE OFF MEXICAN COAST i ■ f MEXICO CITY, December 4. An earthquake late yesterday destroyed 90 per cent, of the buildings of the penal colony on Marias Islands, which form a small archipelago off the west coast of Mexico. At least four persons were killed and many injured. Army aircraft are flying in medical relief supplies. None of the 400 prisoners attempted to escape during the earthquake, but in November six escapees were killed in the water by machine-gun fire from army aircraft. An earthquake rocked several hundred square miles of California at 12.23 p.m. to-day, states a Los Angeles message. It apparently centred most of its force near the desert resort of Palm Springs, where at least six strong shocks were felt. Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was wrecked in Palm Springs, windows were shattered from Ventura to San Diego, and an elephant at the Los Angeles zoo had a miscarriage. The seismologist at San Diego said the earthquake was of No. 4 intensity in the scale of 10. It was explained that No. 4 intensity is listed as “feeble.”

Many shop windows in down town Los Angeles were cracked.
