SUCCESSFUL RALLY

Presbyterian Bible Classes i GATHERING AT MAYFIELD The Labour Day rally of the Presbyterian Bible classes of the Ashburton district, held at Mayfield yesterday, was successful in every - way. There was an attendance of approximately 150 members and visitors. The rally opened at 10.15 a.m. with morning tea, followed by a devotional service conducted by the Rev. Farquhar Gunn, of St. Andrew’s, Christchurch: A debate was then held, the subject being “The Bible Class movement exists for the four-square development of the individual, spiritual, mental, social and physical—that the Bible Class movement, is fulfilling its function in this four-square programme.” The speakers were: Affirmative, Misses Shirley Reid (Rakaia) and Maude Johnston (St. Andrew’s Ashburton); negative, lan Cairns and John McMillan (St. Andrew’s). The main address was given by Mr F. Gunn, his subject being “Personal Evangelism in the Bible Class.” Mr Gunn expressed the need for personal evangelism by Bible class members both ip the Bible class and in the community. He gave members and leaders some very practical advice on how to carry this out. The organist for all the meetings was Mr Noel Harwood, of St. Andrew’s, Ashburton. Sports Programme After lunch a sports meeting was held, the organisers being the Mayfield class. Results were: Senior Men’s Section—loo yards: Mayfield 1,2 and 3. 440 yards: Lagmhor 1, Mayfield 2, Methvcn 3. Mile: Lagmhor 1, Mayfield 2, Tinwald 3. High jump: St. Andrew’s .1, Tinwald 2, Mayfield 3. Long jump: Mayfield 1, St. Andrew’s 2, Lagmhor 3. Hop, step and jump: Mayfield 1, St. Andrew’s 2 and 3. Shot putt: Mayfield 1. St. Andrew’s 2. Mayfield 3. Relay: Mayfield 1, Tinwald and Lagmhor combined 2, St. Andrew’s 3. The winners of the Morgan Shield for senior events were Mayfield, with 42 points. Tinwald and Lagmhor (combined) were runners-up with 22 points, and St. Andrew’s next with 17 points.

Long jump: -Wakanui 1, Mayfield 2, Wakanui 3. Hop stejb and jump: Wakanui 1, Mayfield 2. Shot putt: Mayfield 1, Wakanui 2, Mayfield 3. Relay: Wakanui 1, Mayfield 2. Although Wakanui had the highest number of points, 45, they did not win the Marshall Cup because some of the boys were not affiliated to the Wakanui Class. The cup therefore went to Mayfield with 33 points. Young Women’s Section 100 yards: Tinwald 1, Mayfield 2, Rakaia 3. In the final of the basketball match for the Watson Cup, St. Andrew’s A .team heat Rakaia. The winning team was Misses Ann Vartha, Rosemary Orton, Natalie Turnbull,* Margaret Drummond (captain), Alison Thompson, Margaret Mcllroy and Leitiie Gunn. After afternoon tea, Mr G. Reid, the district, committee president, presented the shields and cups. He thanked all who had helped to make the rally so successful, especially the Mayfield Class.

Each class responded to the roll call with a scriptural greeting. There were 15 classes represented from the Ashburton district and visitors from Timaru, Geraldine, Christchurch and the Presbyterian Women’s Training Institute in Dunedin, also some nurses from the Ashburton Public Hospital. The closing devotions were taken by Mr P'. McDowell of Mayfield.
