DARING BANK ROBBERY

THIEVES NET £ISOO MELBOURNE, October 25. Determined thieves who burned tlieir way into the strongroom with oxy-acetylene gear netted £ISOO in a daring raid on the branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank at Ferntree Gully, 20 miles from Melbourne. The robbery was discovered when the bank staff arrived this morning. The thieves must have spent almost a day on the job. They had climbed to the roof, ripped off sheets of galvanised iron and lowered themselves into the bank below. The iron bars were removed from the front door and the oxy-acetylene gear brought in. This was used to cut a large hole into the strongroom and to burn open an inner safe.

Experts estimate that this must have taken at least seven hours. Halfway through the thieves ran out o£ oxygen for their oxy-acetylene torches, so they broke into a garage and stole two more cylinders. ’
