FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 26, 1898). Cricket—The first cup match of the newly-formed Ashburton County Cric- 1 ket Association was played in. the Domain on Wednesday, between teams from Waterton and Rakaia, and resulted in a win for the latter by six wickets and two runs. For Waterton, W. C. Smith (securing three wickets in three successive balls, and four wickets in five balls), and for Rakaia, W. Lambie and McDonald, bowled best. The following are the scores: Rakaia, first innings 91, second innings 16 for four wickets. Waterton, first innings 56, second innings 49. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(From the “Guardian,” Oct. 26, 1923). .Minister Passes Through—The Hon.. W. Nosworthy passed through Ashburton this morning on his way south. He will probably go to Lake Te Anau in his capacity as Minister in .Charge’of Tourist and Health Resorts. He desires to improve facilities for the journey from the head of Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. On his return from Te Anau the Minister Avill proceed via Queenstown to Central Otago to visit Mount Pisa Station, which is beingmade available for closer settlement. Mr Nosworthy will return via the Lake Pulcaki route to South Canterbury.
