WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
EALING BRANCH Mrs W. Giddings presided over _ a fair attendance at the Ealing Women’s Institute’s August meeting. One new member was welcomed. Letters of cheer are to be sent to Mesdames Reith and 11. McKenzie. Congratulations were extended to Mrs J. With ell. for her excellent article in the Institute Journal on the preparation and cooking of vegetables, and also to Master Alan Reith, on gaining the school medal presented yearly by Mr J. Davidson, to the Hinds School pupil who shows the best signs of good citizenship during the year. Interesting letters of thanks were received from two British families to whom birthday cakes had been sent. A special sales table m aid of the annual leper appeal, is to be arranged for the next meeting. During the afternoon, Mrs Kingston of Coldstream gave a very instructive lecture on lily culture, and the art of crystalising violets and cream, and primroses for cake decorating. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, of thanks.
Competitions resulted : Violets, Mrs Wat,son 1 ; hand knitted Cardigan, Mrs Watson 1, Mrs Forsyth 2 ; shrub, Mrs Watson 1, Mrs Giddings 2; bloom. Mrs Giddings 1; jar primroses, Mrs Watson 1; truss. Mrs Watson 1, Mrs J. Withell 2, Mrs Giddings 3. W'ILLOWBY-EIFFELTON Twenty-three blocks of soap, three tins of fat, and several articles of clothing were handed in in response to the roll call, at a recent meeting of the Willowby-Eiffelton Women’s Institute. Miss J. Bratley presided. An excellent demonstration on the art of printing was given by Miss Shirley Brash. The “Hospital Box,” packed by Mrs R. Quinn, is to he sent to a member in hospital. Mrs D. S. Shaw gave an interesting talk on a visit to the Otakiri district, Bay of Plenty. The Otakiri W.I. link letter was read by R. H. Lill. A motion of sympathy with Mrs P. Read and Mrs E. Soal in their bereavement was carried.
A letter of congratulation is to he sent to Mrs J. McQuilkin on her having been presented with a gold service badge from the Dominion Executive of Women’s Institutes.
Notification of the Country Women’s Travel Group to visit Waitomo Caves and Rotprua via New Plymouth and Napier, under the leadership of Mrs M. A. Constable, was given.
