Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. THURSDAY, JULY 1, 1948. JEWISH METHODS

Although there have heen one or two minor incidents, it seems that the parties in Palestine are observing the truce terms reasonably well. Count Bernadotte has submitted his proposals for peace, and these are now under consideration. Both Jews'and. Arabs have been given the right to make counter-proposals, so it cannot be expected that there will be anything definite to report for some little time. The Jews want peace, and so do the Arabs, but neither is prepared to accept anything which does not conform to their long-held views. In reality the Jews have more to fear from one of their own factions, the Stern Gang, than from any other source. The Stern Gang’s record is one which has caused it to be regarded almost universally as a murder organisation. One of its leaders for a time was Menahim Beigin, now leader of Irgun Zvai Leumi, who has had plenty of experience in underground warfare, and whose methods closely resemble those of the Gestapo. He has based hopes of success on the prosecution of these methods, but they have simply had the effect of doing the cause a tremendous amount of harm. There has been in evidence a very close alliance between the methods adopted by Jewish organisations in Palestine, particularly Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern Gang with Nazi and Fascist techniques, and so long as this continues, there can be little chance of success for the Jews. So many atrocities have been perpetrated by all the Jewish organisations that the wonder of it is that Count Bernadotte has been successful in even securing a cessation of operations for the study of peace proposals. A leopard cannot change its spots, and so it is difficult to see how Count Bernadotte can hope to induce either side to live side by side in peace and harmony. The knowledge of past events is likely to be the cause of constantly recurring trouble, particularly as the. Jews appear to be facing danger from within as well as from the Arabs.
