Meeting of Board WORK ON NEW BUILDINGS \ ' The chairman, Mr W. H. Woods, presided over a meeting of the Ashburton High School Board this morning. « The headmaster, Mr E. A. Cockroft, stated in his report that work on the new - buildings had been at a standstill for the past fortnight because of lack of material. i Mr Woods said that it seemed an extraordinary thing that the new buildings were not completed after two and a half years’ work. He expressed concern at the stoppage of work, and said that the board should make some move to ensure that, materials became available. - After some discussion the Secretary. (Mr G. V. Furby) was instructed to write to. the contractor (Mr L. Wilson) regretting the delay in obtaining materials, and inquiring the reason foi‘ the hold-up, with a view to finding out whether the board could assist in expediting the completion of the building. • The Secondary School Boards’ Association’s conference will be held in Dunedin on August 25 and 26, according to a letter received. Mr D. Moore was appointed the board’s representative, subject to his approval, and Mr Furby was authorised to attend a conference of board secretaries to be held at Dunedin on August 24. Resignations Accepted Two resignations ftam the staff, Misses I. R. Raid and N. Rickard, were accepted With regret. The headmaster stated in his rbport that Miss Reid had been, appointed to a position in Palmerston North, snd Miss Rickard to Hawera. Both teachers had given grand service aiid, due to their special qualifications in music, were exceedingly useful in the .working of the school. He was sorry to lose their services! . ‘ ? The board approved the appointment of Misses Allan, from Milton, aiid Donaldson, from Ashburton, to the staff. ...... In a letter to the board, the secretary of the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association (Mr W. W. Stuart) stated that he had forwarded the best wishes of the association to Mr E. Caradus,. chief inspector of post primary schools, who retired on March 24. : .. Mr Caradus had served his country well, firstly as regards the secondary school services, and secondly as the originator of the pre-training schemes which fitted intending recruits for the R N Z.A.F. by bringing these up to the educational standard required- in mathematics and science, and thus securing many fine airmen who .would have been lost to the service. It was a scheme, moreover, that latterly haa been adopted on an Empire scale. The letter was received. ... Permifesion was granted to the High School Old Boys’ Football Club to use the school grounds for practice.
