LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” April 2, 1898). Wakanui Sunday School —The teachers of the Wakanui Presbyterian Sunday School, with their friends, met on Thursday evening last to s’ay good-bye to the superintendent, Mr W. Corbett, who is leaving the district. A very pleasant time was spent, enlivened with games, sacred songs, duets, quartets, recitations, etc. In.the course of the evening the Rev. Mr Inglis, on behalf of the tpachers, presented Mr Corbett with a handsome barometer, and expressed a hope that in his new home there might always be fair weather. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 9 (From the “Guardian,” April 2, 1923). Rakaia—There has been a very notable increase in the entries of sheep and lambs sent forward to the Rakaia saleyards this year. In times past, \yith only a limited number of buyers operating, there seemed to be no elasticity of price and farmers sold a great deal of their stock to the buyer at the farm. Now the position is different. More competition is in the field, and farmers are refusing to sell to buyers at prices offered <sn the farm, realising that increased prices can be obtained at auction.
