WAKANUI AND TECH. 0.8. SENSORS WIN
The competitions of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-Association were continued under ideal conditions on Saturday afternoon. In the senior A grade Wakanui C beat Barrhill 2 and Technical Old Boys 6 beat Bariiig Square 2. In the senior B section Lowcliffc beat Barrhill by default and Wakanui defeated Lane, Walker, Rudkin by 5 to nil. »
The positions of teams after Saturday’s play, are as follow:
Wakanui Beat Barrhill
Wakanui were on the offensive from the commencement of the match against Barrhill, and had secured a two-goal lead with only 20 minutes of tire spell gone. Barrhill rallied ancl made some determined thrusts but lacked combination in the forwards, all the work being by individual efforts. McCosker, in goal for Wakanui. was playing his usual excellent game and stopped some hard shots both from close in and from near the edge of the circle. Both teams had several opportunities, which were mostly lost through penalties arising from obstructions, several players on either side playing the ball on the left-hand side of the body when an opposing player was within striking distance. This is a common fault with left-hand players, and they should try to overcome this in future games. Anderson had a field day, scoring five of his team’s total, T. Bennett scoring the other goal. Both of Barrhill’s goals were scored by J. Mounsey. Umpires were Messrs E. Kirkman and J. Penman.
Tech Old Boys v. Baring Square
Baring Square were the first to open their account when a move started by their right wing travelled three-quarters of the length of the field and Simpson netted. A. Mayson equalised when he received a pass in front of the goal, his shot catching the Baring Square goalkeeper out of position. Square were playing a much-improved game and. took the lead once more when Olliver scored. However, Technical gained the upper hand when Hopkins twice found the net; and were then attacking till the half?time whistle blew. The Black and White forwards settled down after the interval and were on the attack for'almost the entire spell, many of their moves being spoiled through offside play. Gosnell, Dellow and Penman were putting in excellent defensive work for Square, but the continual attacking by Tech’s forwards earned them another three goals—two by Hopkins and one by Thomson. The final whistle blew with the score Tech. 6, Baring Square 2. Messrs C. Vincent and A. Turnell were the umpires. 1
