ACCEPTED BRIBES
FORMER U.S. CONGRESSMAN SENTENCED (Rec. 12.55) WASHINGTON, July 25. Federal Judge Schweidhaut, in the District Court to-day sentenced ‘former Congressman Andrew May to imprisonment from eight months to two years on charges of accepting 53,634 dollars in bribes while he was wartime chairman of the House Military Affairs Committee.
The court sentenced the munition manufacturers, the brothers Murray and Henry Garsson, to similar terms of imprisonment on charges of having paid the bribes to May. May told the judge: “I stand before the court to-day with a clear conscience. I have never violated a law in the 72 years of my life. I have never received a dollar not honestly eai’ned or justly due.”
