TEXT BOOK SHORTAGE

GOVERNMENT ASKED WHY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July IS. Government contracts to private firms to print school textbooks and journals to overcome the serious shortage of books were suggested at the annuaf meeting of the Auckland branch of the Printers’ Union, when it was decided to seek an explanation of the shortage from the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason). Cases Of children being handicapped in their studies by the shortage of books were mentioned, and criticism was expressed of the excessive prices for second-hand books. It was recognised that the difficulties arose, from the shortage of paper and other causes but it >was considered that an explanation for the bottleneck should be sought from the Government.
