LISMORE W.D.F.F.

SIXTEENTH BIRTHDAY The schoolroom was filled to capacity when the 16tli anniversary of the W.D.F.F. was celebrated. Mrs Mould, president, welcomed the guests, who were present from Methven, Ashburton and all surrounding districts.

The Eiffelton Drama Club staged two one-act plays, which were well received and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Mrs" G. Murdoch, representing the institutes, lit the candles on the cake and conveyed greetings, Mrs Haymes president of the executive, blew them out. She spoke of the benefits of the organisation and urged all women to become members. The cake was not cut as it is being forwarded to servicemen in hospital.

Supper being served, a dance followed to music supplied by Misses A. Fleming and P. Green and Messrs A. Green and S. Fletcher. Mr R. Good was master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Mrs King and Mr L. Addis, and Miss P. Green and Mr S. Fletcher. i

Social Function

A social function which was held in the school was attended by a large and enthusiastic gathering, the occasion being a welcome home to Bombardier Ron McDougall of the J Force and to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs C. Hall and family, wlm are leaving the district. *

Cards occupied the first part of the evening, the winners being Miss Z. Williams and Mr R. Mulligan. Mrs A. Fleming presided and spoke appropriately of Bombardier McDougall’s services in upholding the honour of the district. Mr .T. Addis presented the guest with a gift on behalf of Maronan and Lismore residents. i Mr Fleming eulogised the sterling qualities of Mr and Mrs Hall, who have assisted with everything pertaining to the welfare of the district. Mr R. Good asked the guests to accept a well filled wallet. Mr R. J. Mulligan and Mr J. Addis also expressed regret at the guests’ departure and Wished them success in the future. Mrs Mould on behalf of members of the W.D.F.F., spoke of the assistance Mrs Hall had been to the organisation and presented her with a small token of esteem. Beverley Fleming, on behalf of -the schoolchildren, presented Ailsa Hall with an autograph book.

After the guests were honoured, a dance was held to music supplied by Misses A. Fleming and P. Green.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR HINDS P.W.M.U. AND GUILD The annual meeting of the Hinds P.W.M.U. and Guild was held in the Hinds Church recently. The Rev. R. Taylor presided over a good attendance of members, and members of the Girls’ Auxiliary, and conducted the opening devotions. The secretary read the reports which revealed a very satisfactory year. Many and varied were the talks and addresses given. Mrs Moore congratulated the secretary and treasurer on the reports, this being endorsed by Mrs McKeage. The financial statements were both satisfactory. The election of officers resulted: Honorary president, the Rev. R. Taylor; president, Mrs Taylor;, vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Tait, Ambler, Rhodes and G. Moore; secretary, Mrs H. M. Price; treasurers, Mrs R. Tarbottoh and Mrs Lennie; organists, Mrs Bruce and Mrs Stewart;* “Harvest Field” secretaries, Mrs Mooney and Mrs Smyth; Maori Mission Birthday League secretaries, Misses M. Ambler, C. Keith, J. Lamb and Mrs H. Smyth; “Break of Day” secretary, Miss L. Mooney; stamp secretary, Mrs G. Reddecliffp; “P.A.” representatives, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Ambler; auditors, Mr E. Frampton and Mr S. McKeage. Mrs Ambler presented sprays to the president, secretary and organists. The meeting closed with a hymn and the Benediction. Afternoon tea was handed round by Mesdames G. and L. Moore and Mclntosh.

Missionary Union ,

The monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. and Guild was held in the Lowcliffe Church on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Taylor presided over a fair attendance and conducted the opening devotions.

A food parcel has been sent to Vienna and one will be sent monthly in future.

The secretary • read a letter on Maori Mission work from the Rev. Hogg. Mrs Taylor gave a very instructive talk on religious festivals in the Philippine Islands.

LYNNFORD RIFLE CLUB , SPECIAL TROPHY SHOOTS The Lynn ford Miniature Rifle Club shot-off for Mr N. Baurele’s trophy over two nights, following being the best scores:—C. Dell, 08, 70; J. Bishop, 66, 69; C. Beavan, 68, 65; R. Cocks, 67, 63; E. Bishop, 65, 62; K. Bishop, 67, 65; Cl. McLauchlan, 64, 6S; J. Dwyer, 64, 68; L. Hill, 67, 63; R. Read, 66, 67; J. Gibson, 65, 62; J. Proctor, 61, 65. L. Hill and C. Beavan will shoot-off for the trophy. The senior Hotty Buttons were won by C. Dell on both nights, while for the junior Hotty Button, G. Hill and G.' Tait tied.
