LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,”. July 18, 1897). Water Supply—A' meeting of the ratepayers interested in the proposed water supply from Rangitata Gorge was held in the Ruapuna School. Mr Frazer presided over a very good gathering, considering the inclemency of the weather. T)ie estimates of the council’s engineer were thoroughly discussed and generally considered to be high as regards cost of maintenance, purchase of land, etc. The settlers present were unanimously in favour of the scheme and are also willing to form themselves into a water district and to agree to pay a rate equal to the interest and sinking fund on £3OOO. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” July IS, 1922). Teacher On Leave —Miss C. Menzies, infant mistress at the Ashburton Borough School, leaves this evening on three months’ leave of absence, which she intends to spend in Fiji. Her position at the school will be filled by Miss J. R. Menzies, late of West Christchurch School.
