ENGAGED ROYAL COUPLE
PUBLIC DANCE AT * EDINBURGH (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 16. Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Mountbatten did not go home until after 1 a.m. from their first public dance since their engagement, i The dance, held in Edinburgh, was in aid of’the National Association of Girls’ Clubs. There were country dances and old-fashioned “squ'are” dances as well as foxtrots and waltzes. The Princess and Lieutenant Mountbatten most enjoyed the “petronella” and “(lashing white sergeant.” When the Princess, who is expert at Scottish dances, took her place in a double eightsome reel, Lieutenant Mountbatten (smilingly declined to take part and stood watching the complicated pattern of the dancers, s The Hon. David Balfour partnered the Princess. "I am glad that at a time of great happiness, I find myself in Scotland, for to me Scotland and happiness have always been closely interwoven,” said Princess Elizabeth when acknowledging the honour of receiving the Freedom of Edinburgh. Philip Mountbatten, who stood near the Princess, applauded her remarks.
