TRAGIC SITUATION
DISPLACED EUROPEANS MARSHALL FAVOURS ENTRY TO AMERICA . - (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.), (Rec. 11.30) WASHINGTON, July 16. Speaking before a House Immigration Sub-committee, the Secretary of State, Mr G. 6. Marshall, to-day urged Qongress to take immediate action to admit .400,000 displaced Europeans to the United States over a period of four years.
Mr Marshall said: “The United States is in a better position than any other nation to receive a large quota of refugees. If we admit a substantial number of these people as immigrants then, with what others are already doing and will do, we san actually bring an end to this tragic situation.” Mr Marshall, who was the first of several high Government officials to testify in favour of legislation that would admit displaced persons, added: “In so doing we will also confirm our moral leadership, and demonstrate that we are not retreating behind the Atlantic Ocean.” . Republican leaders say there is little chance of Congress approving of such legislation during the present session.
