ASHBURTON P.A.

TALK By DR. SUTHERLAND There was a very large attendance at a meeting organised by the Ashburton P.A. in St. Andrew’s Hall on Tuesday afternoon to hear Dr. Ai L. Sutherland of the Jagadliri hospital in the Punjab, India. The president of the P.A., Mrs L. Mclroy presided and led the devotions. An elocutionary item “In Lady Street,” was given by Mrs Patterson. Mrs Mcllroy introduced Dr. Sutherland who mentioned that he had been a house surgeon at the Ashburton Plospital before leaving for India to take up medical missionary work there. He then went on to describe the mission hospital in Jagadliri, which is supported by. the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand. He appealed for all possible assistance in regard to the work there, mentioping that the present X-ray room was inadequate and the nurses’ home was much too small. He told how a wealthy Hindu had given a hospital ward and. kitchens to the hospital, and said he hoped that some day a New Zealand Christian would feel moved to do the same thing. In conclusion, Dr. Sutherland appealed for the prayers and continued interest of all P.W.M.U. members for the all important work in Jagadliri, India. Mrs Hendrie, of Wakanui, moved a vote of thanks to Dr. Sutherland. Sister E. H. Elliot, also of Jagadliri hospital was present at the meeting, and spoke of the need there for gifts of old and new linen for the hospital. She also mentioned the love and confidence that the people of Jagadliri had for Dr. Sutherland. It was decided that all P.W.M.U. branches in the P.A. should collect what linen bandages and cardigans they could, and bring to the August meeting of the P.A. to be made into a parcel for Dr. Sutherland or Sister Elliot to> take back to India with them. The solo “How Lovely are Thy Dwellings,” was sung by Mrs W. Newlands. Mrs W. Thomas was the accompanist. After the concluding hymn and Benediction, afternoon tea was served by. the three town branches of the P.A.
