FERTILISER PLANTS

WASTEFUL DESTRUCTION (Rec. 10.45) WASHINGTON, April 18. Ex-President Herbert Hoover told a press conference to-day that the British, American and; Russian occupation forces were “busy as bees destroying fertiliser plants while all Europe was gasping for fertiliser.” Red-faced and angry, Mr Hoover, although acknowledging that some ot these factories were potential munition works, insisted that the present destruction was largely wasteful and unnecessary. / Mr Hoover pointed out that the whole world to-day depended upon international commerce. He declared that unless fertiliser factories were restored immediately, especially in Germany and Austria, there would be a worse food crisis next* year, and the food bills of former enemy countries would be borne by the Allies indefinitely.
