LOAN FAVOURED

GENERAL REACTION TO COUNTY PROPOSAL QUESTION ASKED, “WHY NOT £50,000?” General reaction to tlie Ashburton County Council’s proposal to raise a loan of £30,000 for the purchase of machinery to improve the conditions of roads in the district is favourable, Mr G. Kelly (County Clerk) said this morning. The question had. however, been asked, “Why borrow only £30,000? Why not borrow £50,000 and do tlie job properly?” Further meetings of ratepayers and representatives of the Council concerning the proposal have been held at Mayfield, Winchmore and Staveley. These meetings have been attended bv tlie chairman of the Ashburton County Council (Mr M. S. Turton) and Cr. M. D. McDowell and local riding members. In every centre where meetings have been held an attentive and courteous hearing has been given the council representatives. Questions outlie proposals have been asked and answered with a view to clarifying doubtful aspects, and in addition information concerning the general policy of the council and its administration lias been given where asked for.
