BUILDING MATERIALS
GOVERNMENT ANXIOUS TO IMPORT ESSENTIALS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 17. Housing construction throughout New Zealand was limited by shortages of material and manpower, said the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to-day. There were supply difficulties internally and externally, but it was hoped these would disappear. The Government, he said, bad no control over supplies from overseas, where it was difficult to obain certain types of material which it was absolutely necessary to obtain from other countries. ) Allegations that the Jack of such materials was due to the Government’s import restrictions was not true. The Government, brought from abroad coal, cement, plaster and other materials. It was anxious to import all the essential materials it could got, but it. bad to be remembered that other countries were worse off than New Zealand in respect of housing.
