Debris Hurled Over Square Mile In Factory Explosion
(Rec. 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A terrific explosion causing damage estimated at £50,000 occurred last evening at the joint works of A. C. Hatrick Ptd., Ltd., and Reichhold Chemicals (Australia) Ltd., at Rosebery. Six persons were admitted to hospital, two in a critical condition. Portions of the works were hurled over a radius of a square mile, smashing hundreds of windows. It is believed that a spark from the motor, of an electric agitator fell into a 2000 gallon still of liquid resin causing it to ignite. The resin blazed fiercely. Drums of the solution exploded and a boiler blew up. Timber, sheets of iron and other debris were hurled over houses and factories in the locality. Three employees working in a. shed close to the chemical works were thrown into vats of carbon powder and one of them narrowly missed being thrown into a mixing machine. The explosion was felt over a radius of five miles.
