DAMAGED U.S. SHIP
NEW RUDDER AND STOCK NEEDED (P.A.) DUNEDIN, February 25. Since the arrival at Port Chalmers on Saturday of the disabled United States transport, Merrick, an inspection has shown that to make the vessel thoroughly seaworthy, a new rudder and stock are required. This would lie a long and costly process, and as the Merrick will go out of commission on return to the United States it is improbable that the United States Navy. Department will approve. It is probable that a temporary rudder to enable the vessel to make the voyage to the United States will be fitted at Port Chalmers. The vessel was to-day trimmed by her head, a large quantity of fuel oil being transferred from the aft to the forward tanks, causing the stern to lift. The broken rudder stock is now well above water.
The position lias been advised to Rear-Admiral Richard H. Cruzen, who is on board the ice-breaker Burton Island at Little America, and liis instructions are awaited.
