New Serial To-day A new serial “The Laughing Girl Mystery,” commences in to-day’s “Guardian.” The author is Viola Paradise, who has earned a name for penning stories which retain the interest of readers throughout.
County Road Closed To enable a culvert to he enlarged, in connection with the AsliburtonHinds drainage scheme, McLennon’s Road between Longbeacli Road and Boundary Road was to-day closed to traffic.
Ashburton Club and M.S.A. Officers Results of the ballot for officers were announced at the annual meeting of the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts last evening os follows:—President, Mr H. Sutherland: vice-president, Mr Iv. Thompson; committee, Messrs K. S. Johnston, S. Hawke, D. C. Wood, R. J. Nell, A. Gadd, E. E. Bell, A. V. Hayston, S. W. Kerr, H. C. Patterson, R. Bennett, W. C. Burton and S. Patterson.
Ashburton Bandsman Broadcasts
Following the broadcast by the Wanganui Garrison Band of the . A grade selection at 12.30 this afternoon, Bandsman J. Ibell, of the Ashburton Band, winner of the bqys’ solo under 17, also broadcast. The accompanist for the solo was Bandsman Frank Lowry. It is probable that the broadcast will be repeated this evening.
Students’ Accommodation With university studies beginning in five days, the plight of lpany Otago students seeking accommodation is serious. Between 200 and 300 have made a widespread canvass of the city but few rooms were found. Former servicemen students with families, single women and men are seeking bed and breakfast anywhere, ancl the position is becoming desperate. Almost 50 applications for assistance were received yesterday by the registrar of lodgings, and on his list of homeless students are 32 former servicemen, of whom 20 are married. Hostel accommodation is already taxed, the Seven residential halls providing full board for GOO students. — P.A. '
Catholic Conference Arrangements for taking part in the Dominion Conference of the Federation of Catholic Clubs and Societies at Christchurch during Easter were finalised at a. meeting of the executive of the Ashburton Catholic Club last evening. Mr L. Fox ' presided. The \club will be represented as follows: —Delegate, Mr Fpx; debating team, Messrs L. and B. Hyland; oratory item, Mr K. Reynolds; elocutionary item, Mr N. Qua.id; religious questions, Mr J. Hurley; impromptu speech, Mr R. G. Ross. In the debate the Ashburton members will take the affirmative against St. Mary’s, Hokitika. Ashburton will also be represented in the sports. Members taking part are:—Mr Fox (table tennis), Mr Reynolds (billiards), Mr Pat Jackson (lawn* tennis).
Use of Chloroform
In the opinion of overseas authorities consulted by the Auckland Hospital Board, the use, of chloroform and chloroform mixtures in ear, nose, and throat operations is not in conformity with modern practice. The board sought overseas advice after a difference of medical opinion in New Zealand. Letters supporting the instruction of the director of anaesthesia at the hospital (Dr. G. F. V. Anson) that the use of chloroform and chloroform mixtures should be forbidden in the ear, nose and throat department of the hospital have been received from Professor R. R. Mclntosh, Professor of Anaesthesia at the Nuffield Foundation, Oxford, Dr. Geoffrey Kaye, of the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, and Professor J. S. Lundy, Professor of Anaesthesia at the Mayo Foundation, Rochester, the United States. The board reaffirmed Dr. Anson’s instructions. —P.A.
