FINAL *OF BROWNING SHIELD

ASHBURTON-ELLESMERE MATCH

ON MARCH 15 Saturday, March 15, is the date for the final Browning Shield match of the season between the Ellesmere and Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associations. The match will be played at Leeston. • Advice was received this morning from, the Ellesmere Sub-Association by Mr K. G. Fowke (secretary of the Mid-Canterbury Sub-Association) that Ellesmere had accepted March 15 as the date for the match in preference to March 8, which had also been suggested by Ashburton as a possible date. ’ This will be the final of the shield competition, Ellesmere having already beaten ‘ Banks Peninsula and MidCanterbury having beaten Malvern.

HIGH STANDARD SHOOTING AT NATIONAL TOURNEY (P.A.) TRENTHAM, Feb. 25. With the two leaders, D. J. Flynn (Featherston) and H. King (Opaki) dropping points at the 900 yards shoot this- afternoon at the national rifle meeting at Trentham. the field closed in on them, and the firing of the King’s 50 to-morrow afternoon, which will decide the Ballinger Belt contest, will be interesting.

Flynn leads the King’s 50, one point ahead of King, with several other competitors separated by only one point having excellent chances. A high standard of shooting has characterised the meeting, four of the matches being won with possible scores, including a record achievement in the Canterbury match, when there were two doublerange ppssibles. To-day, F. J. Jeune (Gisborne) won the Wellington match with a double-range (500 and 600 yards) possible. In the afternoon, D. P. Donald (Opaki), who had lost ground earlier in the contest, returned a brilliant possible at 900 yards to win the Southland match.

In the Taranaki match (10 shots at 800 yards), last week G. Cromie, of Ashburton, headed the B grade section and won £3 with a score of 48. Incidentally the winning score in the A grade was also 48. At the end of the day, Cromie was fifth equal, with 144, in the Ballinger Belt. series. The leader was three points better. *

Competing on Saturday in the service championship, W. M. Holland (Ashburton) qualified for the shoot-off with a score of 215 (11th place) compared with the leader’s 230. In the 300 yards deliberafe and snap-shoot-ing match, J. E. Hislop (Ashburton) won 15s with a score of 65 (winner 73)', while at 500 yards, similar conditions, G. Cromie (Ashburton) finished seventh equal with 71 (winner 74) and won £l.

On Monday, in the Auckland match (10 shots at 900 yards), J. E. Bishop (Ashburton) finished 13th equal in the B grade witli a score of 39 and won £l,
