MINOR ALLIES
SHOULD TAKE PART-IN TREATYMAKING (Rec. 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 29. The Greek Ambassador, Mr Thanassis Aglniides, at the Foreign Ministers’ deputies’ meeting, strongly supported the Australian view that the minor Allies who actively fought against Germany should be associated with tthe major Powers at every stage of treaty-making. Great Powers and * neighbours of Gerqjany would have to devise such safeguards as would make it possible for Germany to resume an honourable place in the world of commerce and industry, without being allowed to reduce to economic subservience many European countries, in particular the Balkan peninsula, as was the case before the war, he declared. Greece considered that Germany, as the strongest of the defeated enemies, should contribute in the fullest possible measure to the reconstruction of Greece.
The Foreign Ministers’ deputies lengthily discussed the clauses ou Austria’s frontiers and Austria’s responsibility for preserving her independence, and Germany’s recognition that the Anschluss was null and void.
The French .delegate, M. Couve $e Murvill, said that in a new Anschluss Germany might repeat the action of 1938, or Austria might voluntarily renounce her independence.
The deputies deferred the questions until after the Austrian representatives had ben heard.
