AIR STRIP
ACCESS TO THE HIGH COUNjRY
To bring, persons living in the, highcountry area in the Rakaia Gorge in contact Avith civilisation in case of emergency, the Ashburton County Council has made representations for the provision of an air-strip in this area.
The chairman (Mr M. S. Turton) said at the council meeting to-day that the engineer (Mr R. L. Lindsay) and the Inspector of Civil Aviation had visited the Rakaia Gorge and selected a site for an emergency strip. Ml* W. Machin (chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board) had favoured the establishment of a strip Avhen they Avere conferring on the high-cquntry inspection last week, said Mr Turton. Credit Avas due to the council for getting well ahead with the business, he added. Mr Lindsay said that two sites had been picked out, and one of these was definitely possible. It Avas 50 yards wide by* 450 yards long and could be formed by use of farm machinery and then sown down. The inspector was most favourably impressed Avith the site, said Mr Lindsay.
