SERIOUS LOSS

FIRE IN INVERCARGILL (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. The warehouse of Fairbairn, Wright, Ltd., and substantial stocks of groceries, hardware, cigarettes and chemists’ accessories, were completely destroyed by fire early this morning. Units of the Invercargill Fire Brigade were called out a few minutes after 5 o’clock, but the fire had such a strong hold on the corrugated iron building by then that there was no chance of saving it.

The firemen concentrated their efforts on saving the adjoining Public Works Department buildings and equipment. The bandroom of the Southland Battalion Band was severely damaged, but fortunately instruments had not been left there. No details of insurances or an estimate of the loss are yet available, as the policies are held in Christchurch.
