PLUNKET SOCIETY

MEETING AT METHVEN

COUNTY CENTRES

Mrs H. E. Jessop presided at the monthly meeting of the Metliven subbranch of the Plunket Society. The nurse’s report showed that four visits were paid to the district in October. Visits paid to homes totalled 46, 10 of which were new cases. Visits to rooms included 54 adults and 57 babies. There were seven pre-school children, £nd new cases for the month totalled five.

EIFFELTON GIRLS’ CLUB

ANNUAL GARDEN PARTY The December meeting of the Eiffelton Girls’ Club, held last Thursday at the home of Mr J. Cocks, took the form of a most enjoyable garden party. The roll call, “Embarrassing situations,” provided much amusement and was keenly responded to. It-was. reported that members had gathered at Mrs Brash’s home to make a. wreath for the late Mrs J. Johnston. The next meeting of the Girls’ Club is to be held in the Eiffelton Hall in March, after the busy season. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting, tennis was enjoyed by those present. Afternoon tea brought a most enjoyable social afternoon to a close. Final Welcome Home Ball After a most successful afternoon’s activities at Eiffelton last Friday, a final welcome home ball was held in the.hall, which was filled to capacity. Mr J. Cocks (chairman of the committee) thanked all for helping to make the gathering such a wonderful success. Mr G. E. Blee (chairman of the Longbeach Soldiers’ Social Committee) made a short survey of the work that had been carried out by the committee during the Avar. Mr M. S. Turton (chairman of the Ashburton County Council) expressed regret that.he was unable to be present in the afternoon. He referred to the fine work carried out by the men of the New Zealand Division. Mr Turton then complimented the ladies of the Red Cross Society, on the wonderful work they had so tirelessly carried out over the dark war years. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr R. Dabourn’s orchestra. Several novelty dances were conducted, winners of three being Mr F. Smith and Miss Coombs, Miss C. Billings and partner, and Mr Robertson and Mrs McKay.
