MYSTERIOUS MALADY ON LINER

250 PASSENGERS AFFECTED CAPETOWN, December 12. A mysterious sickness involving 250 of the 1000 passengers aboard the liner Dominion Monarch swept the vessel between London and Capetown, but was not sufficient to prevent her from continuing her voyage to New Zealand, via Australia. The first symptoms came seven days out from Tilbury, when the passengers complained of severe intestinal pains, - diarrhoea and sickness. The ship’s doctor called a conference of a number of doctor passengers who investigated the trouble, which it is believed to be due to the ship’s water. Members of the crew told them the tanks had not been reconditioned since 1939' and similar outbreaks had occurred on other voyages. The secretary of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Mr Ralph Hodson, said the troubles seemed to be due to the contamination of food.
