MASS RESCUE

Ice-bound Fishing Boats (Rec. 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 12. More than 3000 Russian fishermen were saved from ice-bound fishing boats in the Caspian Sea in a remarkable mass rescue campaign, says the Moscow correspondent of the Associated Press. The boats were trapped late in November when, after one of the worst hurricanes on record, the shallow Caspian Sea froze over. Planes flew through gales and fog to drop supplies, and then guided 287 men in a trek over many miles of snow and ice to safety. The planes later guided to port the boats which broke free. Several of the larger boats which sank after being squeezed in the ice were refloated. A large refrigeration ship was salvaged. The loss of the fleet would have been a major tragedy, as it is responsiblel for a large part of the Russians' big fish catch.
