WOOL AUCTION AT CHRISTCHURCH

MERINO SELLS TO 39|d Average prices probably in excess of anything since the 1924 season were realised at the first Christchurch main wool auction to-day. The catalogue was 18,097 hales of new wool with 2500 of greasy stock and 1800 ot scoured slipe stock. Bidding was exceptionally keen from the Continent, with local mills buying almost all of the super wool offered. Some buying on American account gave useful support. Bradford operations were limited. The sale was slow but steady throughout. The basis of values established early in the morning held all day. Passings were negligible. The biggest proportion of the offering was fine hogget wool with a good showing of other early shorn wool. After the mild winter and excellent spring, hogget wool from North Canterbury and Marlborough was in outstandingly good order. Some Soirth Canterbury hogget wool was dusty. Adult wool was inclined to be dingy, but in general sound. The sale opened with the first lot making in excess of 30d, and that price was equalled or exceeded regularly during the day. The top price was 39fd, for a single lot of Merino, which has seldom been exceeded at Christchurch. The best price for half bred was 363 d. Little fleece wool of any quality changed hands below 24d. Some Continental and all the local men seemed to be operating without limits. Stock wools also' met with an excellent demand, and most of the catalogue was cleared. The range of prices was:
