AIRLINER CRASHES
THIRTY-NINE PERSONS PERISH LONDON, October 4. All the occupants, numbering at least 39, of the Skymaster airliner which crashed into a hillside, Newfoundland, 1C miles from Harmon airfield, are known to have perished. A ground party which reached the scene after struggling eight hours through a rugged countyside reported by radio: “No survivors.”
It is now known that six children ranging from three months to 11 years were among the 31 passengers. Altogether, 13 women including a stewardess, are dead. Helicopters are flying to Harmon airfield from Gander to carry air line, coastguard and army officials to the scene of the crash. They are the heircopters which were used to evacuate the survivors of the crash of the Sabena Skymaster l near Gander on September 18, when 19 died. An official at the Harmon airfield stated that the weather at the time of the crash was “pretty good” and there were several arrivals and departures from the airfield during the night. He added that the altitude of the hill into which the Skymaster crashed was about 2000 feet, and he could not understand why the pilot was unable to gain sufficient height to clear ii. The crash certainly was not the result of bad visibility.
