LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Oct, 5, 1896). The Liberal Candidate —The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton Central Liberal Association was held on Tuesday night. There was a fair attendance and the president, Mr P. O’Connor, was chairman. The chief business transacted was the ballot for a candidate to receive the association’s support, and on the papers being opened it was found that Mr John McKeague had obtained a majority of the votes in the proportion of eight to one.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 5, 1921). Long Overdue Debt —The conscientious discharge of debts long forgotten is not so common an occurrence as -to make the following incident unworthy of note. A retailer gave up business in the Ashburton County in 1912 and in winding lip wrote off an account for £2 2s which a working man was unable to pay. To his surprise he has now received the amount by post, without any request being made for payment.
