DRAIN WORK RESULT?

ASHBURTON BRIDGES DAMAGED (“Guardian” Reporter.) - Claiming that damage to three bridges during the recent heavy rains was due to . the drainage works in progress, the Ashburton County Council wrote to yesterday’s meeting of the South Canterbury Catchment Board at Tipi-;; aru asking that repairs be effected. The Council’s letter, dated September 30. was as follows: “During the recent heavy rain; as a result of your board’s operations in deepening and enlarging drains, damage has been suffered by three road bridges as follows: The abutment and wingwall on the Flemington drain bridge at the corner of Ford’s and Graham’s roads have been undermined and a hole scoured out in the approaches; the approach to the Flemington drain side bridge on the Lower Beach Road has been • slightly scoured; and the side bridge on the Lower Beach Road over the Parakanoi drain has been badly affected by scouring of the abutments. “As this damage lias been caused as a result of the board’s operations, it seems only reasonable that the board should meet the cost of the repairs.” “I cannot admit responsibility for the damage without an inspection,” commented the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward). The engineer was instructed, to make an inspection and report back to the board.
