GOOD PROGRESS

NEW SCHOOL NEGOTIATIONS ASHBURTON EAST COMMITTEE Satisfactory progress in connection with negotiations for the rebuilding of the Ashburton East School was reported at the montli- | ly meeting of the committee last! ! evening by the chairman, Mr J. K. Mather. Mr Mather stated that, with Mr I-I. Mills, he had interviewed the actingMinister of Education, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, during His recent visit to Ashburton. They had received a very sympathetic hearing, and the Minister had promised to do all he could to expedite matters. Mr Nordmeyer had since telegraphed that the Building Controller had given his approval; that working drawings had been received by the Education Department; and that, as soon as specifications were received from the Education Board, Cabinet approval would be obtained. A letter from, the Canterbury Education Board also came before the meeting, and in this it was intimated that the plans and necessary supporting documents were dispatched to Wellington on August 10.

Other Business The Education Board forwarded the application of Mr John Small as a Grade B assistant master in place of a soldier-teacher on extended leave, it was decided to approve of the appointment. i The monthly report of the dental nurse was received, also a report on business transacted at the last meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association. The chairman stated that Mr Edgar, the Board member for the district was anxious to meet the committees of the local schools, and had suggested the fourth Wednesday in the month. It was agreed to the suggestion and to meet in the Borough School on September 25. For the visiting committee, Mr Hitchins reported that trouble was caused by trespassers in the school precints, and an endeavour to stop this should he made. Dr. W. J. Boram.an reported that, when in Wellington recently, he had purchased a fordagraph from donations made from the Jubilee Funds. The matter of a school picnic was discussed and it was left in the secretary’s hands to see if suitable train arrangements could be made. ; Messrs Inch and Kirk were appointed visiting committee for next month. Besides the chairman, there were present at the meeting Messrs A. Sutherland, J. Kirk, H. Mills, J. Hitchins, T. Childs and the headmaster (Dr. Boraman). *
