WOMEN AND WORK
INTERNATIONAL LABOUR OFFICE REPORT (Rec. 12.30) NEW YORK, Sept, 3. In a report entitled ' “War and Women’s Employment,” the International Labour Office says that in spite of the war-time increase in employment, women, particularly in skilled work, are demonstrating their suitability in many occupations from which theymay never be displaced. The report says that women’s opportunities for work in better categories has nevertheless not been guaranteed. In many industries the traditional classification oK women’s labour still needs to be broken down. Such matters as status on a job, seniority and promotion continue to be more secure for men than lor women.
The report adds that placement opportunities based on individual characteristic's likewise remain superior for men.
The report concludes that equal pay for equal work may become a necessary public policy in Britain and America to avoid the disruption which is likely if certain types of work are performed at lower costs by women.
