SHELL FELL SHORT
FRENCH LINER FIRED ON AT SUMATRA (Rec. 9.20 a.m.) COLOMBO, Sept. 3. The captain of the II de France reported when he arrived at Colombo that a shore battery on the coast of Sumatra fired on the liner on August 19 when bound for Saigon from Europ6. The gunners were rapidly closing the range after the first shot, which fell 300 feet from the liner, when the captain changed course and sped out of range. The captain sent a radio warning to another liner, the Marshal Joffre, asking the captain to steer clear of Sumatra.
