OBITUARY

MR GEORGE J. WALLACE The death occurred in Christchurch on Wednesday of Mr George J. Wa|" lace, a former resident oi Ashburton, and later of Timaru, where he was Mayor from 1923 to 1929. Born at Southbrook, Mr Wallace Was educated at ‘North Canterbury schools and Canterbury College. He was the proprietor of the engineering firm of Wallace and. Cooper, anti followed • the occupation of engineer throughout his life. The firm operated in Ashburton under the same name* being located in Cameron Street, opposite where the Technical School now stands. Mr Wallace was a member of the Ashburton Borough Council from 1903 to 1905. In the life of the community Mr Wallace played a full part. There was no more zealous worker in local body affairs than he, having on the Timaru Harbour Board, the South Canterbury Power 'Board, the Timaru Technicarßoard of Managers, as well as being a member for many years oi school committees. . He was closely identified with the Timaru Municipal Band, his practical encouragement assisting in raising it to an exceedingly high standard. Mr Wallace found great pleasure in flowers, and he was deeply interested in the work of the Horticultural Society. In sport, he played bowls and was a member of the Kia Toa Club. He was a Dominion Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge. Mr Wallace is survived by his widow and one son, Mr E. C. Wallace, of Timaru. MR R. B. LAMBERT Advice was received in Ashburton to-day of the death in Auckland of Mr R. B. Lambert, who was manager of the local branch of the National Bank for about 15 years. ; Mr Lambert retired from the service, while in Ashburton, about fouf years ago and went to live at Devonport, Auckland. Ho was a member of the Ashburton Golf Club and of the County Club during his stay here. He was a returned soldier of the Fiist World War.
