WILLOWBY SCHOOL

END-OF-TERM CONCERT The end-of-term concert, given by pupils of Willowby school, held in the local hall, proyed a popular function. Great credit to due to the headmaster, Mr Woolman, and to Mrs Woolman and Mrs D. Shaw, who assisted in the production of the concert. The programme was as follows: Piano solo, Graham Hill; doll’s dance, infants; Maori action song, senior pupils ; verse-speaking, the company; play, “The Woman Who Lived in the Shoe”; item, “The Sun,” infants; song, “Dem Golden Slippers,” group of songs, and “Widdicombe Fair,” by pupils. The closing item was “A Child’s Prayer,” the chief part being taken by Daphne Pearce, accompanied by all the pupils. ? After supper a short dance was enjoyed, Mrs D. Shaw and. Mrs S. H. Fill providing the music. Mr Shaw was master of ceremonies. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs Woolman and Mrs P. Shaw, and a button-hole to Mr Woolman- by the pupils, all being accorded musical honours. Mr Chalm„ers (chairman) presided over the function.

LAURISTON W.I.

MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Lauriston. Women’s Institute Mesdames H. J. Crothers, A. Goodwin and C. A. Fyfe were appointed to confer with the Lauriston Soldiers’ Social Committee concerning a final welcome home to all returned soldiers of the district. Mrs Crothers presided over a good attendance. The motto, “Worry is interest paid on trouble before it is due,” was read by Mrs C. Hilgendorf. , The arrangement of a birthday party was placed in the hands of Mesdames J. A. Macltie, J. G. Marshall and Fyfe. • Gifts were received for the Lepers. "It was reported that a parcel had been forwarded to Driver D. McManus, and that another will be sent to V.A., M. Daly. t Competitions resulted: — Vase of flowers, Mrs Hilgendorf 1, Miss .T. Skinner 2, Mrs A.'Goodwin 3; best bloom, Mrs V. Boag 1, Mrs Fyfe 2. Miss Skinner 3; madeira cake, Mrs .Crothers 1, Mrs Fyfe 2, Mrs W. Goodwin 3; pretty handkerchief, Mrs E. Doak 1, Mrs Bennett 2, Mrs Macltie 3. Mrs Hilgendorf was the hostess.

HINDS DRAMA CLUB

ONE-ACT PLAYS PRESENTEDOn Wednesday last the Hinds Drama Club presented its second series of plays. There were three one-act plays and a sketch. The members showed the benefit of their previous experience in an improved standard of acting. There was a good attendance. Supper was provided and a very enjoyable dance followed. Music was Supplied by Mr Ray Dabourn. Successful Hare Drive The Hinds School Committee held a very successful hare drive on Saturday, when 400 hares fell to 50 guns. Those in charge were J. Davidson and the president, Mr R. Teller, who thanked all present after a good day’s sport.
