MAN FINED £SO
LOTTERY ON TOTALISATOR FIGURES
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 23. The story of a racket within a racket was told to Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., this morning, when William John Norwood, married, admitted a charge of establishing a lottery. He was fined £SO. Sub-Inspector Forsythe said that Norwood was conducting an illegal lottery from his home, and more than 3000 “tote” tickets priced at Is each had been seized on the final three numbers of the totalisator figures for race meetings, and the first prize was £2l, other prizes tapering down to 2s 6d. Norwood had been conducting fom of these lotteries a week and had received an income of more han £2O a week from illegal gaming. This type of lottery was assuming grave proportions in Auckland. Counsel for Norwod said that some one else was running a racket because seven- winning tickets had been handed in for four prizes. The Magistrate said it was very interesting to note that there was a certain amount of forgery going on, and that the promoter might get caught with a double pay-out. However, if people continued to take part in such a lottery or promote it, they must pay the penalty.
