HIS LAST RACE
WOODERSON AT OSLO (Rec. 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, August 23. When victorious in the 5000 metres, at the Oslo Games,- Sydney Wooderson (Britain) won the last race of his international athletic career, says the “Daily Express” Oslo correspondent. Wooderson collapsed 10 yards beyond the tape. Pale, limp and breathless, he told the correspondent: I intended this to be my last big competition race. I gave it all I had. I am going to finish the season and my career by having a shot at the twomile record.” Wooderson said he “blacked-out after his victory, and had not heard a single cheer. A Nottingham schoolmaster, John Archer, against all predictions, opposed the redoubtable Continental sprinters and won the 100 metres in 10.6 seconds, which is three-tenths of a second outside the European record. The young British jumper, Alan Patterson, from whom much was expected, could only win second place in the high jump with 6 feet 5i inches. The Swede, Polinder, beat him by one inch,
