SHORTAGE OF NURSES
DANNEVIRKE SUGGESTION (P.A.) DANNEVIRKE, This Day. After having again disussed tho shortage of nurses, the Danne\'irko Hospital Board decided-to make representations to the Department of Health through the Hospital Board’s Association Avith a A r ieAv to obtaining exemption for nurses from the payment of social security taxes as a means of encouraging girls to join tho profession. Previously the chairman of the board, Mr P. C. Smith, had remarked that if the number of occupied beds in hospitals went on increasing and the number of girls entering the nursing profession declined the sick Avould be receiving less attention than they Avere to-day. “I do not think the offer of free stockings and ward shoes will tempt girls into hospitals, but I do think the Government should consider the advisability of exempting nurses in training paying national and social security.” He added that a nurse in her second year of training had her salary reduced by 4 per cent, for superannuation and 10 per cent, for national and social security, and vet could claim only one benefit.
