The Minister of Works, the. Hon. R. Semple, is expected to arrive at Timaru on Sunday afternoon and, on Monday morning, he will announce nis ten-year plan for Mid-Canterbuiv ‘and South Canterbury districts. He leaves that afternoon for Christchurch, and will be accompanied as far as Rakaia by the Rev. Clyde Carr M.P. who will address a meeting in that centre the same evening.
The Rev. J. M. McKenzie, of Wellington, assistant director of missions of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, has accepted a call to the pastorate of the Maori Hill Church, Dunedin.
Advice that Mr W. H. Sarney had been reappointed as representative of the Ashburton Borough Council on the Technical High School Board was received from the Town Clerk (Mr R. .0. Major) by the board at its monthly meeting last evening.
Mr W. A. McCaw completed 50 years of service on Tuesday as the session clerk of First Church, Invercargill. This is believed to be a record, for service in the' Presbyterian Church oi New Zealand. At its meeting the Presbytery of Southland extended its congratulations to Mr McCaw.
Mr John R. Smith, who has been chief engineer for the National Broadcasting Service for the last 14 years, has retired, but he will continue to act as adviser on the technical side. Mr Smith, who was a son of Mr H. Smith, an early carrier of Ashburton, was at one time a member of the local Post Office staff.
The Rev. J. R. Higgs, of Featlierston, has been appointed vicar of Christ Church, Wanganui, one of the most important parishes in the Wellington Diocese. He succeeds Archdeacon J. R. Young, who has resigned to become vicar of Pahiatua. Mr Higgs was formerly a C.M.S. missionary at Lagos, and from 1934 to 1941 he was vicar of Kowloon, China. He came to New Zealand in 1941.
