YEAR REVIEWED

TECHNICAL SCHOOL BOARD ROLL SECOND HIGHEST IN HISTORY Last evening’s meeting of the Ashburton Technical High School Board, being the last for the current year of the hoard as at present constituted, the chairman (Mr 11. Watts) presented his annual report. Special reference to the accommodation problem was made by Mr Watts, who said that it must be very gratifying to the hoard to know that its representations for further classrooms had been successful. An outline of the repairs and maintenance carried out at the school during the year, and furniture, fittings and general equipment installed, was given by the chairman. Strong Support Accorded The report continued: “The day school roll of 357 is the second highest in the history of the school. The strong popular support accorded the day school for so many years is evidence of the satisfactory nature of the instruction which it has to offer. Of the four courses offered, the trades course, catering for 152 students, is by far the largest. The agriculture course is taken by 35 hoys, the commercial course by 7 hoys and 58 girls, and the domestic course by 105 girls. The roll of students in the evening school totals 179, distributed over 22 classes. Increased enrolments are noted in apprentices’ classes in motor mechanics (practical and theory), carpentry and joinery, building construction, and electric wiring and fitting. Manual training classes in woodwork and cookery for 28 primary schools in the county" show a total enrolment of §22. Of these 243 are boys and 279 girls. “The enrolment, position, with corresponding figures for last year in parentheses, is: Day school 357 (350), evening school 179 (183); manual training 522 (539); all departments 1058 (1072). “We were pleased to welcome Mr H.
